Career and Technical Education - Grants to Native Americans and Alaska Natives

NACTEP provides grants to federally recognized Indian tribes, tribal organizations, Alaska Native entities, and eligible BIE-funded schools to improve career and technical education programs that are consistent with the purposes of the Perkins Act and that benefit Native Americans and Alaska Natives.

Direct Home Loans for Native Americans

The Udall Foundation provides a ten-week summer internship in Washington, D.C., for Native American and Alaska Native students who wish to learn more about the Federal government and issues affecting Indian Country.

The purpose of the Native American Language Preservation and Maintenance – Esther Martinez Immersion (EMI) program is to provide financial assistance to community-driven projects designed to preserve Native American languages through Native American language nests and Native American language survival schools.

For FY 2015 there is a new Native Youth Community Projects (NYCP) priority under the Demonstration Program competition in which the Office of Indian Education will be soliciting applications.

Social and Economic Development Strategies (SEDS)

The Social and Economic Development Strategies (SEDS) program is focused on community-driven projects designed to grow local economies, strengthen Native American families, including the preservation of Native American cultures, and decrease the high rate of current challenges caused by the lack of community-based businesses, and social economic infrastructure in Native American communities.

The Social and Economic Development Strategies for Alaska - SEDS-AK focuses on increasing the ability of tribal and Alaska Native Village governments to exercise local control and decision-making and to develop and enforce laws, regulations, codes, and policies that reflect and promote the interests of community members.

State Tribal Education Partnership (STEP)

The purposes of the State Tribal Education Partnership (STEP) program are to:

  1. Promote increased collaboration between tribal education agencies (TEAs), State educational agencies (SEAs) and local educational agencies (LEAs) that serve students from the affected tribes; and
  2. build the capacity of TEAs to conduct certain administrative functions under certain Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) formula grant programs for eligible schools, as determined by the TEA, SEA, and LEA.

Sustainable Employment and Economic Development Strategies (SEEDS)

The purposes of the Sustainable Employment and Economic Development Strategies (SEEDS) program are to:

  1. Creation of sustainable employment opportunities;
  2. Professional training and skill development that increases participants' employability and earning potential;
  3. Creation and development of small businesses and entrepreneurial activities, and;
  4. A demonstrated strategy and commitment to keeping the jobs and revenues generated by project activities within the native communities being served.

Title VII Formula Program for Indian Children

The Title VII Formula Program for Indian Children program is designed to address the unique education and culturally related academic needs of American Indian and Alaska Native students, including preschool children so that these students can achieve the same challenging state performance standards expected of all students. The program is the Department’s principal vehicle for addressing the particular needs of Indian children.

Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, Section 166 Indian and Native American Programs

The purpose of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, Section 166 Indian and Native American Programs is to support employment and training services for Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian individuals in order to develop more fully the academic, occupational, and literacy skills of such individuals; to make such individuals more competitive in the workforce; and to promote the economic and social development of Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiian communities in accordance with the goals and values of such communities.
